Wood grips for S&W Model 10

I have an S&W Model 10-6 and am considering replacing the factory wood handle with a Hogue wood handle. I like the way they look but am concerned about how they will perform v. a rubber or boot handle. Does the rubber handle cushion your hand better than the wood? I hate to spend the money if they will not improve the gun's performance even if they look good. Thanks for any comments.David
