1903 Sprngfld (Mark I)

Are these guys safe to shoot ?? As I understand, receivers may not have been heat treated resulting in some catastophic failures. Anybody ???

  The general consensus is that all guns made at springfield over serial number 800,000 are safe and that Rock Island Springfields over 285,507 are safe. The "low numbered' springfields under these serials made by these two arsenals are supposedly unsafe, though only something like a half dozen ever burst. A guy from Springfield armory said the whole low/high number thing is a bunch of sh$$ and that all are safe. If it were me, I'd still avoid the low numbered ones with full charges, but would shoot them with light charges, say around 35,000 psi.

  I came across this one from an estate. It has been sporterized with a monte carlo style stock. Drilled and tapped for weaver bases. No rear sight and the front sight has been ground down (urgh). The barrelled action has been completely teflon coated (black). Bore is crisp and clean. Barrel marked S A, 11- 9. Looks good, but not my 'cup of tea' as they say. S/N is 1,13x,xxx.It is for sale...........
