cleanshot vs. pyrodex vs. black powder
Which is the best for my muzzleloader?

I have only used Pyrodex, but will restock with Cleanshot. The problem with black powder (if you can find it) and Pyrodex is that they are corrosive. Cleanshot is reported to be non-corroseve and non-fouling. For shooting they all use the same VOLUME of powder. 0 -
I have used Pyrodex exclusivly in three different calibers, roundballs, conicals, and sabot/bullets year round since the mid-80's;Pyrodex is an outstanding product, 100% dependable, and you can find it / buy it anywhere;Pyrodex is much safer than BlackPowder and there are no strict storage laws like there are for BlackPowder;BlackPowder is very difficult to find, fairly expensive, creates a high degree of fouling, and it's post combustion residue is the most highly corrosive; Purodex is much cleaner than BlackPowder, so much so that you don't have to clean the barrel between shots like with BlackPowder;However, muzzleloaders need to be thoroughlycleaned after a days shooting regardless of whether it is BlackPowder, or any of the BlackPowder substitutes due to the nature of the residue left after combustion of those chemicals. If you like "CleanShot" you better stock up. My powder supplier has warned that Goex is raising the price by as much as 25% and that they (Geox) had an explosion at their mfg. plant where the product is made, so it may not be available for a while till production is restored. 0 -
I have seen first hand the differences between Blachpowder and Pyrodex Select. My friends and I all hunt with flintlocks and have several shooting events leading up to the seasons. I have witnessed FFF Blackpowder foul a barrel so bad after 4 shots that the guns wouldn't group again until a brush was run through the bore several times to remove the residue. On the other hand I started out using Pyrodex Select ( dumb luck ) and have shot a 6 inch groups at 70 for years with no special attention being paid to the barrel during the shooting events, we all use salbots and 44 mag bulletts, 240 grain hollow points, and have put a lot of deer in the freezer, 2 this year. We do use FFFF blackpowder in the flashpans. Hope this helps, we can afford to shot what ever we want but Pyrodex Select is used by 90% of our group. 0 -
I have used Pyrodex powder, the pellets, and clean shot pellets. I am going with the clean shot as it leaves hardly any residue. BUT-I have found that muzzleloaders with the standard #11 cap, don't seem to ignite the clean shot fully. It feels like a reduced load. I converted my gun to the 209 primer system, and clean shot seems to be full power using that type of primer. Also, switching to clean shot seems to change point of impact vertically. JIM 0 -
Thanks for the info. I was told that cleanshot was not as consistent accuracy wise as pyrodex select. My own experience was that with the same wt charge, same bullet,same point of aim, the cleanshot load hit 3 inches higher and 3 inches right than the pyrodex load. Accuracy fell off quicker with the cleanshot but further testing needs to be done. I'll keep trying and see what works best for me and my rifle. Thanks. 0
