Could this be a Merkel you have? 2 9/16 is 65mm and you gun is chambered for this European shell. And No you can't shoot a 2 3/4 in it it. Chamber is too short! In fact the 2 3/4 should not ever chamber do to the length. 2 9/16 shell are available for a price.

Some of these were converted to 2 3/4 you could have one of those. Measure the chamber. Also I would only shoot low brass in it[This message has been edited by 22WRF (edited 01-03-2002).]

A 2-3/4 inch shell will chamber in the short chamber. Shotgun chambers are measured to the uncrimped/fired casing.. Shooting the longer shell in the short chamber will result in excessive pressure. Either have a gunsmith lengthen the chamber or buy the proper ammunition. WWW.hillrodandgun.com These people sell the short shells. There are other places also. If this is a model 12, it's probably a very early one, and has some collector value. I would just shoot the short ammunition in it and leave it origional.WOODS[This message has been edited by woodsrunner (edited 01-04-2002).]

Just wondering about how the measurement was taken, because a common European length was/is 2 5/8". Pretty close to 2 9/16". Some 12's were done for the Euro market, and are scarce.
    Happy Bullet Holes!

A good many years ago before I learned better I shot 2 3/4' shells in my Win Mod 1912 16 ga & broke the end off the firing pin.
