45 cal muzzleloaders - Bullet selection

Does any body shoot 45 cal bullets through these things or were they designed strictly for sabots with subcaliber bullets. Just wondering if a guy can shoot the same bullets in a 45 cal that he used in a 50 cal, just delete the sabot used in the 50 cal?

I realize this is physically possible but don't know about accuracy.

    My H&A underhamer carbine likes the T/C pre-lubed bullets found at many gun stores.

    I have shot a borrowed home built .45 with a 42" barrel that liked conventional lubed maxi balls very much. I found it too dificult to drive the plastic sabot rounds down that much barrel.(almost needed a step ladder)

    Try Power Belts..I've found them to be easy to load and very accurate.

    I agree with the "Power Belt" bullet. However, when selecting bullets for your "front loader", first know the rate of twist your barrel has, then length of barrel. It would be best to measure the lands on the rifling, easly done at the muzzle. Do you shoot Pirodex or black powder? If black powder, do you use double fg or triple fg?
    From this step, get a selection of bullets you'd like to use and sample each round, three or four shots with different powder charges. See what groups best for you.
    I went through this with a hand-built 45 cal. rifle with 34 inch barrel. It was 1 in 66 inch twist, and will shoot real well with a .440 round ball and 65 grains of fffg black powder, but can't hit the barn with a conical bullet.
    It just takes some experitmentation. Have fun & be careful.

    I also like Power Belts, but what R.L. Smith said is correct, if the twist is slow it will do better with round balls in most cases.

    What I was really wondering about was 45 cal pistol bullets. Just wondered if anybody was using, say a .45 acp bullet for plinking or maybe .454 Casull bullets for hunting?

    NO you can NOT use a regular pictol bullet all by itself, even if you found one to fit the bore there would be nothing to seal the gas from escaping around the bullet when you fired it , round balls use a patch to seal, with conicals bullets their base upsets to seal the bore , pistol bullets use a plastic sabot to seal , power belts use a plastic skirt, , if you want to use pistol bullets you can buy them in 100 packs and you can also buy the plastic sabot in 50 count packs which are a lot cheaper than the prepackaged stuff
