I prefer Hungarian and Bulgarian AK's. Right now Arsenal has some good post ban models. Also, watch the GB auctions for the Arsenal SLR 95 used. You can't get a preban for "cheap".
Under $500 I would buy the Arsenal SLR 95. Actually, I did buy an Arsenal. My other AK is a Hungarian Preban underfolder. Except for the "bad" feaures, the Arsenal is just as good or better.
Great guns! Plentiful ammo! Conversation pieces! Perfect...

i have shot several of my friends and did alot of reading on these before i finally went with a bulgarian model slr 101s just a newer model of the 95 with milled receiver chrome lined bore and it accepts high cap mags this gun is a very nice shooter guess i paid a little over $500 brand new in the box plus a 30 and a 40 round mag good luck with whatever you buy TIM 0 -

The AK's I have are all excellent shooters for what they are; medium range, medium caliber, semiautos with big mags.
I've got a MAK90, AK74, AK47 from Germany, and a Hesse Arms parts gun; and they all work fine.
Price is whatever you're willing to pay for a robust, simply made battle rifle that uses inexpensive ammo.

I can't lie an tell you I don't like Aks, especially owning a: Polytech AKS with underfolding stock and spike bayo, a unfired Polytech Legend with bayo, and a Hungarian SA-85M....but if I would take an Fn Fal over an AK anyday.
The Fal is more fun to shoot, way more accurate, ect. The Ak just doesn't do it for me.
If you decide to go the Fal route....please stay away from the cheapies.
www.frontlinearmory.com does somereally nice Fals that are properly timed, properly headspaced, properly built, built enough quality US parts for legality, and very nicely refinished.0 -
Thanks - for all of your help

Got to say I really like my Romanian Sar 1. I have shot it side by side with the Bulgarian and found mine to be just as accurate for less $$. With the money you save you can go buy a boat load of mags & accesorries.

Jeff Cooper says we should be able to handle an AK beacause there are so many around we may be forced into using one, so you better know what they will and will not do. I'm going to buy one as soon as Kalifornia repeals its "assault weapons" ban. yep, got the money right here, rearin' to go.[:D]I you want one, do your homework and buy one. Polytech is a good one.
