Best method for de-greaseing an SKS

I finally sprung for a Yugo SKS 59/66 at the local gun show. Good price, with all the goodies, $120.00.

I can't seem to find the post someone put on the forum about cleaning off the grease. Can someone fill me in on what to use? I've heard kerosene, paint thinner and the like.

What do I use on the wood to clean the grease off of the stock?

    I use Kerosene on the metal. It leaves an oily residue that I feel penetrates unreachable parts. You have to scrub a bit. I use a regular automotive parts brush for this. I have a commercial de-greaser that I use for cleaning the stocks. I have heard that home detergents used un-diluted will do the same thing. You can do a quick fix by mixing mineral spirits and linseeed oil half and half and wiping it on, or you can do it right with pure linseed oil or tung oil, with steel wool rub-downs in between coats. Birchwood Caseys' "tru-oil" gives a wonderful finish, also.

    Heck I used SimpleGreen.After degreasing it I used WD40 to desplace the water.After that I wiped it down with gunoil(Remignton).CW

    Kero seams to work good, I have also used gun scrub. Most of the guys I have talked to here in the Houston area use soap and water, I have also noticed rust on some of the guns they have cleaned.

    I use gas and a parts brush in a big pan. Keep it away from heat and flames. Finish with Brakekleen for a nonoily surface then put whatever preservative you like on it. Hot soap and water with a brush works for the wood.

    Remove all metal parts from the wood stock that can be removed. Clean the metal part with any of the above ideas that were posted. For the Wood wipe off all the grease you can with paper towels, then use a pair of rubber gloves and Eazy off oven cleaner, spray on leave set for a couple of minutes wash off with hot water. Repeat if necessary. Dry with hair dryer. Rub on some gun oil or start your refinishing of the stock.

    Skip the Easy-off (and other oven cleaners), there made of caustic soda / lye and will weaken the wood.

    Soak the wood in Simple-Green and HOT water for 30 minutes, scrub with a soft bristle brush (like a "fingernail brush") than rinse with more HOT water and let air dry.

    I start the Wood into it's soak bath, and clean up the metal while it's soaking. The stock will be dry and ready for final assembly about the same time as the metal work/assembly is done.
    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    Remove from wood. Boiling water poured on the metal will remove most grease then flash dry. Spray down with WD40 a few times to get any remaining out. Wipe off. As for teh wood, if you want ALL the grease OUT and all the finish GONE, purple power from wal mart is best. Put in a spray bottle, spray, let sit, repeat, etc. Then wash with hot water and let dry. Works great but DOES remove finish! Otherwise, a wipe down with Kerosene and a heating with a blow dryer (or better yet, paint stripper but keep it moving or it will singe) does a decent job.

    I used a parts washer at my local mechanic's shop. Just took the whole thing apart and put all the parts in to soak for an hour, whammo - all clean. Then just a wipe down and gun oil to protect.

    As for the stock - THROW IT AWAY. Cosmoline never stops coming out of it and a new ATI stock can be purchased for around $45 on Gun Forums!!!
