Encore rifle-convert to pistol?
What is the law concerning an Encore bought as a rifle and then later on converting it into a pistol? I remember this question being addressed but I cannot find it in a search. Thanks

I'm not sure, but I think it's something like a pistol frame can be converted to a rifle but both pieces have to be swapped at the same time (barrel AND stock). If you just put a shoulder stock on the short barrel gun that's illegal. As far as going from rifle to pistol length, I think that too is illegal.
I bet if you looked back through Mark C's posts you'd find what you're after. I know this has been covered too.0 -
By what I remimber is that the ATF Ok'ed the encore being changed from a rifle to a pistol, BUT contact the ATF to make sure. But if you do put a barrel on under 16" it is unlawful to have the stock on the gun no matter what. 0 -
I know you cannot put the short barrel with the rifle stock, just wanted to know if it is okay to go with short barrel with pistol grip which would make it a true pistol.

Here it is:search from earlier post.
ATF, as usual, is correct. Refer to www.stephenhalbrook.com/tc.html
On June 8, 1992, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Contender pistol & carbine kit are not a short-barreled rifle under the National Firearms Act, 26 USC5845(a)(3). This means that a consumer may possess the pistol with its 10" barrel and may use the kit parts to make a rifle with the 21" barrel as long as the shoulder stock is not assembled onto the receiver at the same time as the 10" barrel.
TC makes no distinction between pistol and rifle receivers; therefore, it you bought a receiver only you can assemble it onto whichever barrel configuration you desire as long as you assemble it with the correct stock (buttstock with rifle barrel or pistol grips with pistol barrel).
Take the time to read the complete ruling by the court.

Thanks for the follow-up 4wheeler! Good reading. 0 -
Here in Michigan you can buy the frame as a long gun but once you assemble it as a grip and pistol length bbl it is then considered a handgun and must be registered. May be different in other states. 0 -
ok, you can convert it to a handgun. the barrel must be 16" minimum. the overall lenght must be 26" minimum 0 -
Check your state laws. I have heard over and over that some states require that the frame be originally registered as a handgun to be used in that configuration. 0
