I recently acquired an Investarm SPA .54 caliber percussion black powder rifle. It came with cleaning supplies, powder, caps, buffalo bullets, etc. I have been interested in shooting black powder for a while, but never got around to purchasing a rifle and kit.

Now that I have the equipment, I am in need of some education/training.do you have a favorite book you can recommend for a black powder beginner?

I had good results using the "Lyman Black Powder Handbook", when I was still shooting them.

It was very comprehensive. Believe it's out in a second edition now.

Try Amazon or Bookfinder, you still might be able to get hold of a used first edition.

Better yet, post your location on the general discussion forum and maybe an experienced bp shooter will be glad to help.
Books are great, but they aren't as thorough as a person on site with ya.
Once you see and smell the black powder you'll be hooked - consider yourself warned! [;)]

"The Complete Blackpowder Handbook" by Sam Fadala is a good reference source. For specific questions related to your rifle, follow the advice above re: Posting questions. Good luck. BP shooting is a hoot.

Thanks guys! I live in NW Washington, and the local Sportsmans Club I belong to has a blackpowder group so I'll get in touch with them. I want to do a little reading and there are so many books out there, I was looking for some recommendatons to narrow my search. I'll look for the Complete Blackpowder Handbook and the Lyman Black Powder Handbook.

    Again, my thanks!

The Fadala book is a good one. Also Tony Bridges, Advanced Black Powder Huntingis useful and more basic than advanced. Another useful book is Fadala's Gun Digest Black Powder Loading Manual. When you are buying bullets, take a look at Power Belt Bullets as well. I think you will like those. Good Shooting!
