H&R Model 196...?
Any of y'all ever seen or heard of a Model 196 .22 cal. It has a 6" barrel and is a break action confirguration. Checkered walnut grips. The cylinder holds 6 rounds. More description..
On left side of barrel: H & R "Eureka" Sportsman No. 196
On right side of barrel: 22 long rifle CTG.
On the top of the barrel: Harrington & Richardson Arms co.
Worchester, Mass.,U.S.A.
The serial no. on the frame is R262. (located on the frame where it extends into the handgrip)
On the back face of the cylinder the number 262
This gun has adjustable front and rear sights.
I recounted the holes in the cylinder and confirmed its six.

The blue book lists neither model 196, nor Eureka. Most of the listed .22's have 7 or 9 cartridge holes in the cylinder.[?]
Balderson also does not list either. Made in Worchester, this goes back to H&R's early days, before they moved to Gardner.

I only found one reference for a H & R "Eureka". It notes that the "Eureka" was a Suicide Special made by H & R in the late 19th Century.
That doesn't seem to agree with your description.
I've never seen a Suicide Special with adjustable sights?
The 6" barrel and "Sportsman" marking seems to disagree with that to. Doubt if it's a Suicide Special.0 -

the h&r eureka sportsman no.196 was manufactured for a very shot time 1939 and 1940and possiblity only 1940. the only h&r catalog it is listed in is 1940. it is a single action target version of the model 999 double action. it has a very short cylinder to elininate the bullet jump from cylinder to barrel. it also has a heavier than normal hammer and a heavy coil hammer spring that create a very fast lock time while maintaining a 2 1/2 to 3 pound trigger pull. the eureka sportsman should not be confused with the sportsman single action no. 199 manufactured from 1932 until 1941. world war ll stopped production and develomement of this very limited production handgun. i have only seen one that i was able to study.

almost forgot, the 1940 catalog list the eureka sportsman no.196 as being chambered for 6 rounds.
