Canadian Ross 1905 Bolt disassembly

Anyone out there know the disassembly procedure for the bolt of a Canadian 1905 Ross straight-pull rifle? I have some internal problem, namely the bolt head doesn't want to rotate into the locking lug recesses when the bolt closes. I'd like to take the bolt apart to see what is wrong. Thanks!

    They say a wise man knows his limitations and in this case I am EXTREMELY reluctant to even atempt to explain the disassemby/reassembly of the Mark II (1905) Ross Rifle bolt. The problem is that the bolt is very complex and difficult to take apart and reassemble and it is far to easy to reassemble it incorrectly, insert the bolt back into the rifle and fire a round with the bolt totally UNLOCKED! There were a number of deaths and serious injuries caused by this when the Ross was a Canadian service rifle before and during WWI including a few lost eye balls.

    I can tell you that the bolt is assembled wrong if the distance between the bolt head and the bolt sleeve is less than 1". If this is the case with your rifle then the bolt has been assembled in an UNLOCKED condition and should not even be inserted into the rifle due to the potential danger of someone firing a live round in what appears to be a correctly assembled weapon. My old boss at the gun shop, who knew more about firearms than any man I have ever met and had forgotten more than I will ever know, would not even touch one of these Ross bolts. I suggest a trip to a gun smith to have the rifle look over carefully and then have the 'smith strip, clean and reassemble the bolt for you. We have an outstanding gun smith on our board here and perhaps he'd be willing to walk you through this delicate process via this forum or e-mail.

    Ross Seyfried did an article on these rifles in either Rifle of Handloader Magazine several years ago. I'll see if I can't find my copy. Mark is correct on these rifles being assembled incorrectly, they are dangerous if done so.
