Canadian gun transfer

About 3 or 4 months ago I asked some advice on how to get a hunting rifle into Canada. No one seemed to know excatly what to do and most of the advice was all negative. Basicly everyone said forget it, too much trouble. And it seems several people have asked about doing this and never gave any details. I do not know the gents handle who gave most of the commits.
Well I did not follow the advice and found out what had to be done. Guess what, all of the folks out there were wrong. The Canadian officals could not have been nicer and answered all of my questions and gave me the phone numbers of who to contact. The US State department was equally as helpfull. There is a lot of paper work to fill out but if you take you time and follow the instructions everything will go well.     Mark Christian, I have another twist on my problem of getting a rifle to a Canadian friend. Or anyone else that can help. What if I hand delivered this rifle to my friend as a gift?Would this be a problem to do? It seems that this woud fall under a different set of rules. Here is my thinking on this. My friend is a guide and I am going to use him on my next bear hunt with a bow. If I took my rifle on my bow hunting trip and gave it to him as a gift would this be legal to do? I know I will have to fill out the 3 page form to bring my rifle into Canada but if I left it with my friend as a gift to him what would I need to do to make this gift legal. Any and all help will be greatly appreshated. Any info on who in Canada I will need to talk to, and phone numbers, about this would be nice also. Thanks

    The exact method of doing this sort of transfer legally was explained to you and it now appears that you are looking for a way around the regulations and I NEVER give such advice. When you arrive in Canada with your rifle you will fill out a permit in triplicate which acts as your Canadain license and firearms registration for 60 days (and pay $50). Guess what? When you leave the country those sneaky Canadian Customs folks are going to want to see the rifle and take back part two of the permit in order to match it up with part one. Leaving at a different crossing than the one you entered at? Makes no difference as they match up the copies in Ottawa and you are on their computer and can be tracked at light speed no matter where you exit short of going over the Niagra Falls in a barrel! No longer have the rifle with you? BIG TROUBLE and please don't tell us how you plan to claim it was stolen because this is a felony.

    Here is the drill for gifting a firearm in Canada: Both parties need to have a valid Canadian license to posses firearms. The rifle must be registered and fees paid. The transfer of the gift must be approved and then the rifle registered again to its new owner. Your 60 day import permit does not allow you to transfer firearms to anyone under any circumstances. You can call 1-800-731-4000 for more details and I thank the gentleman from Canada for his very useful link to Canadian firearms laws. My opinion on this once again is to forget about it! I would not go through this for my own mother much less some shooting buddy so just follow the regulations and do everything legally. If anyone else wants to chime in on this post be my guest because I've said my last words on this subject!
