7.62x54 or .308
I was recently given a Hungarian M44 and a Romanian M44, I know they shoot 7.62x54mm but will they also shoot .308 caliber ammo[?]

NO! .308 is interchangable with 7.62X51

Your M-44's use the 7.62x54R cartridge ONLY!!!!!!!!
7.62(mm), 30cal and .308 denote a caliber, which is the size of the hole in the barrel (all three of these happen to be the same size hole BTW) NOT the cartridge it's chambered for.
7.62x54R denotes a cartridge/chambering (somtimes refered to as the 7.62x53R)
7.62x51NATO denotes a cartridge/chambering (same as 308Win)
7.62x63 denotes a cartridge/chambering (same as the 30-06)
30-06 denotes a cartridge/chambering
308Win denotes a cartridge/chambering
R stands for RIMMED (flanged to the British) not Russian as some people believe.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

Every now and again it seems someone is always trying to use "something other than what it is supposed to be." Why, I ask myself? No Ammo available? Just want to be different? I always ask myself what is actually going on.
Here's the real "gist of things!" How much soda pop can you get out of the Pop Machine that takes quarters ONLY? Can you get any out of it using dimes? Don't work, huh? Well, maybe nickels, then. Still NO LUCK? Well, try pennies......... You really want to be that mean to yourself? You play this game with a gun and you might just hit the jackpot but you won't like the payoff!
If you don't understand the Nomenclature, (Wording) of the Cartridge size, ....... it might be you need to find out exactly what it is. A 7.62x54 is NOT a .308 winchester!!!! If you have some sort of "death wish" you can play around......otherwise, USE WHAT ITS CHAMBERED FOR!
If you don't have ammo and can't get it.......get some custom made....don't try to use a different one than is called for! If there isn't any ammo anywhere, HANG IT ON THE WALL AND FORGET IT!

lewd, as Henry suggests, it is *possible* to fire a different (wrong) cartridge in most firearms. Walking away from this uninjured, however, is highly likely to be a different story. I have about five cases from incidents of this nature which I've picked up over the years. Some were removed from the remains of the firearm, in one instance after the shooter recovered in a hospital. Playing Russian Roulette is only slightly more risky. Paul's advice is spot on; don't substitute, don't put anything in the chamber unless you are *absolutely* certain it is the right cartridge!! Remember that "close" (and this one isn't) only works in horseshoes and handgrenades . . . altho using the wrong ammo can result in a situation comparable to the latter.

The nice thing about 7.62mm x 54R vs. .308 Winchester is that it's damned unlikely you'll confuse the two cartridges, especially with the 7.62's glaringly obvious rim. Now, I'd expect it to be more likely that someone would accidentally stuff a .303 British or maybe a .30-40 Krag into a Nagant, because these are rimmed cartridges too. In either case, there would be hell to pay, especially if the victim managed to get the bolt closed... 0 -

NO, you shouldn't do swap 'em as a matter of practice. However, if I was stranded in the mountains and starving you bet I'd throw one in the chamber.0
