Winchester 1897 12 Guage

The neighbor dug an old 12 guage out of the corner of his garage. It is a pump with hammer in full choke. It has light rust on receiver and barral. He wanted to know if its worth restoring or reconditioning? How many were made? It was passed down to him by his father and he has had it for 40 years.

    You're not giving us a lot to work with, here. What is the barrel length, and how about a more detailed description of the markings.
    If there is only light rust, 3-or-4-0 steel wool with Break-free ought to do all that's necessary, and a working Model 97 is certainly worth that effort.

    Winchester 1897 was made from then till about 1955, about 1.3 million produced. If it is good enough to restore, it can then be worth $250 to $400 as a shooter depending on the quality of the result. '97s are in some demand by the Cowboy shooters, cutting the barrel to about 20 inches. I think Joker is right, start with gentle efforts to clean it up to see how it comes out. If it turns out badly pitted, it will take more drastic means, assuming it isn't too far gone to make the result worth while.

    Barrel is 30" no rib with single bead at end of barrel. The markings on the barrel says full. That is the only marks I could find on barrel. The slide on the pump action says 1897 winchester. Action doesn't want to slide all the way shut and hammer won't cock. Will try some break free and see if I can see any other markings.
