early rem 7mm mag

i have an early rem 700 7 mag in my shop that has a dull blue finish on it. the barrel is blue but is stamped stainless steel. my ? is. is the receiver also ss

  i have heard the reason the finish flakes off these guns is the early process didnt take very well....maybe the answer to your question can be found out with a magnet; ???...goodluck !

  i've tried that and a magnet sticks to the barrel too

  To the best of my knowledge and from the books I have, only the barrels are stainless steel. They were made from 1962-1970 in 7mm Rem. Mag., 264 Win. Mag. and 300 Win Mag. )and command a premium of 15% per the Blue Book of Gun Values).

  im going to take the barrel off of it and replace it with one that im going to chamber to 7mm stw. i just didnt know about the receiver, thanks.

  Most stainless barrels will still let a magnet attract to them.
