    welcome to the forum.. I own a 29-2 and the gun has never failed me to open ect, with the heaviest handloads. Factory loads shoot fine also..

    Yes, the older models were/are reliable. I bought a newer model after reading about it in one of the gun mags in 1990 or 1991. It was Smith's way of competing with the Ruger Redhawk. I had to sell mine, and now am financially able to buy another. I don't care for the stainless model.

    I do not know about the longer grooves you mention. However, S&W is offering a BLUE Model 29 exclusively through RSR, item #SW161234FC and it comes with a 6.5" barrel. Retail should be about $600. and should be available soon.
