shotgun choke ?
I bought a beretta xtrema recently for hunting ducks over flooded rice fields. I have always shot 3.5 shells for the extra reach, but since I started using the beretta my friends shooting 3" shells have been outdoing me. I shot my gun at some paper today with win 3.5" #2s. It was horrible you could have driven a truck through the spaces in my pattern. I was using the modified choke which I have always been told is labeled for lead so it is actually a full steel. Then I shot the same shells through the improved modified choke and it was much, much better. My question is can I shoot steel 3.5" shells through the improved modified choke without damaging anything since I have always been under the impression that modified was as tight as you were supposed to go with steel shot.

Your right, usually mod is the tightest choke for shooting steel shot.
I have a Benelli Super Black Eagle and all 5 chokes are marked with their size and whether or not steel shot is ok. The Benelli chokes are marked with steel being ok only down to Mod. Iam not sure if Beretta uses the same system.
Take a look at your chokes with a magnifier and see if maybe they are stamped.

L.L. is correct, and on a side-note the Beretta and Benelli chokes use the same thread and can be interchanged if you ever buy aftermarket chokes.
Now, for your "holes in your pattern", try different brands, try different shot size, etc. Some guns will shoot 3.5" lead so tight it nearly looks like a slug but will shoot steel all over the place. Just experiment and see what works best for you. I've been known to use skeet choke with 3.5" steel and increase the shot size for better penetration (albiet at the expense of less pellets).
