.28/.410 Reloader

Hoping for some help! With the 28 and the 410 being my two favorite shotguns to shoot, the price of these shells almost make me have to get another job just to shoot them. Is there a reloader at a fair price (100.00) or less that will load both of these shells without alot switch over hassel and extra parts. Also rate per hour-100? Or will that drive the price way up?

    MEC 650Jr at $88 comes set up for one gauge. To change gauges you need a die set, different bar, different powder bushings. Having the primer feeder accessory is nice, a "universal bar" eliminates the need for different bars and bushings every time you change loads/gauges. 50 shells/hour once it's set up is easy (5 handle pulls per shell, one shell at a time in the press)
    On the other end of the spectrum, the MEC 9000 presses will spit out shells almost as fast as you can shoot them, but it's around $500 last I looked, and isn't easy to change over. (one pull of the handle per shell, auto advance between loading stations) With one person working the press, a second keeping the hoppers (shot, powder, wads, hulls) full, and a third boxing shells I've done in excess of 2000 shells in 3 hours time.
    Unless your into league skeet (or other high consumption year round usage) I'd recogmend getting 2 USED Mec 650Jr's, one in each gauge.

    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    go even simpler than that, go for a mec600jr. get one for each gauge and keep it set up. because of those small ga.'s you dont want to fool with progressive anything. make one at a time on hand moved stations. used presses go for about 40 to 50.00 with dies.

    As always, I'm a day late on bobski's answer.

    However, he gives good advise. I have used a mec650 for 410 and ended up going with a 600jr due to the "unique problems" with the small cases. (I also recommend only Winchester hulls for the 410)
    The 28ga seems to be OK in a progessive.
    I don't know what you consider to be a burden when changing loaders for the ga., but the 600jr change takes about 15 minutes, so you may wish to consider the 600jr and two sets of dies. Also consider an adjustable bar instead of all those inserts, you will have some powder flakes, but it allows you to load any combination you want.

    I'll throw in a vote for two loaders. I am currently using a borrowed mec 600 for 410 and have my own settup for the 12. I have been watching for two years and have yet to see a used mec for the 410 or 28 ga go for less than about $75 while12 and 20 ga are a dime a dozen By the time you add shipping you might as well buy a new one at the local gun shop. I have also had little luck in purchasing convesion dies for the 410. I think new dies run around $45 and used ones are demanding nearly that same price. The conversion may only take a few minutes but it seems like adjusments for the 410 are a bit finicky
    (= ruined wasted hulls) thus my recommendation for two loaders. 100 per hour shouldn't be a problem and if you do any amount of shooting even a new press will pay for itself very quickly. I have had good luck with both WIN AA and REM SST hulls in the 410 but forget about federals unless you are set up to roll crimp them.

    Thanks to all for the info! Santa gave some extra cash for christmas and Calabe's is just down the road[:D]. I'll be looking at both the MEC600Jr and the 650Jr.

    If you want cheap and functional check out the Lee shotshell reloaders. You can usually get them from the discount suppliers like Natchez, Wideners,etc. for less than $40.00. They come with everything you need to load. I have used them at a friends house and was suprised at the quality of the shotshells they would reload. I really felt bad when I looked at the price of my Ponsness-Warren and Mec presses. I was concerned that someone I knew would see me using them though!-- All kidding aside, If you aren't large volumes of shells for trap shooting, etc. they will get you by for very little investment.................Good luck [:D]
