T.C. Encore or rem. 700
hi how is everyone ben buisy hunting any way i met a fellow who invited me elk hunting next year in wyoming and i am going and i would like some input for a caliber and rifle i have a 308 rem. 700 and it droped both deer i pointed at out in pa. in dec. but i am not so sure it would do the same to a elk i am thinking of either a 300. win. mag or a 300. win. short mag i cant realy deside on witch. i am also at a total loss as for the rifle i have ben looking at the tc encore and of corse the rem.700 i am wondering if i should get somthing i can take apart and change a hundred diffrent ways ro go with a conventional rifle. any sugstions youall have would be helpefull i hope[:p]thanks cj

You can't go wrong with either... The 700 is a repeater and as you know the other isn't. The TC will be cheaper, especially if you get multiple barrels later.
The .300 mag should be just fine for elk, but I think the .308 would work too, but would likely limit your range some.0 -
well its the inital caust i am looking at if i buy a tc its about 600 with no scope the 700 rem. in 300short mag is about 480 with out a scope but i cant deside if i want all of the options the tc offers its like going fishing with 4 poles witch do you use right now all can work but what will? the tc seams cool and can become all but is a purpos rifle better the 308 i have shoots wonderfully. but will it dropp an elk at 150yards or will i have to shoot sevral times?i want to be sure about my gun then the rest is my dooing so i still nead help on what to do will the 300 replace my 308 or is the a place for both or do i get the tc and a few barels? pros and cons please thanks [:p]c.j. 0 -

Why spend 600 for a one time gun, when 480 will more then get the job done.

I'd stick with your 308 and just go with premium bullets, if you're only planning on 200 yards or less your 308 will do fine 0 -
hay gskyhawk what kind of placement are you talking about? i can find the sweet spot on a whitetail no problem just one rib behind the sholder blade for entry and a little high on the blade cuts the lungs maine blood supplie and exit threw the rear of the other or stratethrew the deer just behind the blade high of corse it causes alittle trama to the spine that way they dropp where they stand or a veriation like that next season i a m going for a new shot in the neckhope that will work as well and will not ruin anay moore sholder meet the neck i grinde up anyway so that wont bother me but back to an elk where do i shoot it or does any one know where i can get a digram of an elk thanks for all of the replies and i am not sure yet but my308 may be getting a real good scope insted of a safe mate thanks [:p]c.j. 0 -
one thing to remember is a typical 180gr. 308 bullet when sighted at 100 yds. drops about 6" at 200 yds and at 300yds. it's like 19", but if sighted at 200yds. at 100 the rise is like 3" and at 300yds. the drop is like 10", I wouldn't even think about beyond 300 yds. so know your range & sightin accordingly for success. 0 -
I got 2 deer in PA myself in December(Tioga County) with a Rem 7600 in 308 win.....Anyway, I would say leave the 308 Home on this Elk hunt and get a Good stainless synthetic 300 Magnum of some sort
I am Not Knocking the 308 as an Elk Rifle I am sure Thousands
of the Jumbo Critters are killed with that round each year But with all the Time and Money invested in an Elk Hunt I recomend Going with the larger caliber,Just my way o Thinkin[;)]

Oconnor took them w/ a 270, and I'll bet there have been a number taken w/ a 22lr, but ... get the odds on your side.
If you think you've gotten pumped up seeing a PA deer wait till you see one of the big boys.
Elk are tough critters. Over the years I've taken 2 with TC contender setups, one if 14inch scoped pistol config. the other in rifle config. both times I used 35 Rem. handloads. Since I acquired a 375 Win. barrel I've not had the chance to go back, but if I do, the 375 will be what I go with.
By the way I have a 45-70 but wanted something that shot a little flatter as because I thought the range may be out around 300 yds. I was wrong, both were much closer. One maybe just over a 100 and the other right about 80.
If you've got the extra money go with Encore or Contender because of the flexibility and yes, the challenge of having a single shot weapon that if your darn fast you might get off a second shot, so the first better be on the money.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
i live in colorado where there are alot of trees and sometimes the elk are in the black timber where a single shot is all you would ever get and at othertimes they are across the canyon on a run at 600 yard...i would never limit myself to a single shot..the elk numbers are supposedly increasing dramatically, but I go every year and may not harvest one for four years in a row...wyoming doesnt have near the tree cover of colorado and when it snows it is not uncommon for them to move out onto the sagy plains...unless you plan on hunting around cody or the park, I think i would go repeater in the magnum...an elk is a big target and in windy wyoming it would be a bummer to get all the way out there and have to pass on a 400-600 yard broadside shot cause you dont have the horsepower or a backup round...i have seen an elk drop at 200yards from a 243 like he was hit by lightning and then again I personally lost an elk that was feeding and didnt even know I was there at 265yds when hit 3 times in the chest from a sub MOA .270 using a bipod...the romance and allure of taking an elk with a single shot or small caliber would make for a great memory , but it could also lead to a memory you wish you didnt have...my two cents worth 0 -
I wouldnt be affraid to use the 308. Its all about shot placement. I work with a guy who lives in utah and hunts elk with a 270 and does fine. Rem is always a great gun for the money. 0
