Smith Wesson 629 Classic
I am in need of information regarding the Smith Wesson 629 Classic. What year did the classic show up? What are the differences between a classic and standard 629, and did S&W change the pin on the hammer and make it external? The reason for the questions is I have a 629 Classic with factory power ported barrel from the early 1990's and have heard they have changed a few things since then. The 629 classic was introduced in 1990. There have been 4 changes since then.
1994 they changed the rear sight leaf and extractor.
1996 they began shipping in the blue plastic boxes.
1997 they change the thumb piece and began shipping with locks.
1998 they changed the frame design to eliminate the cylinder stop stud, changed to hammer with floating firing pin, and changed the trigger internal lockwork.
The most noticeable difference between the 629 and the 629 "Classic" is the classic has the full underlug barrel.
I have 2 629's. One is a 4" standard barrel, round butt with the firing pin in the frame. The other is the Classic, with underlug 5" barrel with the firing pin on the hammer. They both have red ramp front sights and white outline rears.
They changed to the hammer mounted firing pins in 1998 on the 629, 629 "Classic", and the 629 "Classic DX".
