Lee Enfield Black Paint

What type of black paint was used on some WW1 and WW11 Enfields as a final finish? Was it a special high-heat paint, or just an old time enamel? What were the metal surface treatments prior to painting?

    Welcome to the Forums: I'd recomend using Enamal as its not as Brittle as Laquer..Enamal is much easier to repair...it wears down and will scratch easy...but Laquer will tend to chip off in Flakes and requires more prep to repaint..

    Duplicolor's high temp flat black enamel gives a similar look once the gun is oiled up, and will take lots of heat.

    If you are talking about the 303 Enfields, that is not really black paint! It is oil. The metal is heated cherry red then dipped into the oil. I was told that by a buyer for Century Arms International. I too thought it was paint till he told me that. Something about the type of oil they use and the heat makes the oil bond on like paint. A hard enamel does come close to the finish. If you really want to do something neat to one, strip the finish, buff the metal, and then parkerize it. refinoish the wood and the brass butt plate if it has one and you have one sharp British Enfield 303!
