    re: "stop an intruder"

You may want to rethink that line of reasoning. In my own ccw qualification classes we were taught to only use factory ammo. It's pretty much a guarantee that you will face a civil lawsuit after using deadly force. The bad guys lawyer will twist it around that you intentionally used extra nasty ammo. Also there is no way to document the ballistics of what you used on him.

    ....I never met a gun I didn't like!

RRFHUNTER MAKES A GOOD POINT ON THE LIABILITY ISSUES INVOLVED WITH HANDLOADED AMMO OF THE SORT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. I WOULD ADD THAT CCI AND OTHERS HAVE FACTORY SHOT LOADS THAT WOULD BE A BETTER IDEA IF YOU FEEL THE NEED FOR THEM. WHEN I LIVED IN ARIZONA AND SPENT A LOT OF TIME IN SNAKE COUNTRY , I ALWAYS HAD THE AIRWEIGHT SNUBBY LOADED WITH CCI .38 SHOTSHELLS AND USED THEM MORE THAN ONCE WITH GOOD EFFECT.

If you want a shot style or frangible type load for home defense, use the Mag Safe or RBCD (respectively) loadings. As others have noted, even if the home-brewed loads were actually less deadly, the sad reality is the legal weasels would have a field day with your use of them on their poor, misunderstood, client (or the estate beneficiaries). What a shameful state of affairs it is when a perp's life / health is accorded greater value than that of the intended victim!

I usually carry the first two rounds in my NAA .22wmr Minirevolver as shot. Not as much for people as for snakes. But if it came down to it, I would just start pulling the trigger. I think that in a short barreled .38spl, its gonna have a little more punch that my .22wmr. But to my experience, the CCI shotshell's I use bouce back off of the plywood targetboards at the gunrange within 5 yards, but right up it will kill a snake.

I think I'd just stick with some real bullets. I'd worry about how fast you can reload more that what the first to shots are going to be. Cause these guys out here have been smoking that marijuana laced with inbalming fluid. It makes them GOD. They feel nothing. You're literally going to have to wait till they are physically incompacitated (the blood stops flowing the brain) before they go down. And thats going to take as many holes as you can get to get that blood out of their body as fast as you can. Whether shot will penetrate enough, I don't know. I think you'd just end up with alot of vainular bleeding if you use shot. I'd want something unjacketed that will penetrate, expand, and splatter inside.

I tell you, the last thing you want to happen is to shoot the guy in a vital spot that would probably stop your average joe. Then he walks up, with about half of his blood missing, and takes the gun out of you hand, and beats you with it. Cause it can/does/will happen. I remember we had a guy in the jail here who was smoking that "wet" (inbalming fluid), and the guy refused to come to put his hands thru the door to be restrained. The supervisor shot him with the tazor. Both electrodes shot out and hit the guy in skin, clear contact, lit the guy up, and it didn't even phase him. Then they let loose with the OC. Nothing. It eneded up taking five strong arms to go in and restrain him. Pressure point control tactics, strikes to the groin, to the face, and even to the throught didn't do nothing. I guarantee you that you could have filled the guy full of holes and he'd still be fighting until he bleed out.
