Rechambering a Schmit-Rubin (practical?)

I've seen Schmitt-Rubin rifles---those goofy Swiss guns with the straight-pull bolt actions---and have heard several people sing their praises as accurate shooters. They're not bad-looking rifles either. The problem is, they utilize an expensive, hard-to-find cartridge (and please don't tell me "it's easy" to find inexpensive 7.5mm Swiss, because IT AIN'T.) Now...How tough (or impractical) would it be to have one of these rifles rechambered in a more sensible round like .308 or .30-'06 or whatever would be plentiful, inexpensive and closest to the 7.5mm Swiss to minimize rechambering problems?

    You may encounter some in .308, seems like I remember them years ago.

    You would have to set the barrel back to get to a smaller diameter (the 7.5 Swiss has a base diameter of .493, while the Mauser family, including the -06 and 308, use a base diameter of .470), so it wouldn't be a simple rechamber job.
    Per Donnelly, brass can be made from the 7.62x54R, but unless you own a lathe, it would be less work and expense to purchase the correct brass.
    Not to be a smart alec, but have you considered reloading yet? One hundred pieces of Norma brass would give you a life time supply of ammo, and it uses standard .308 bullets.
    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    Brass can also be made from .284 Win. brass. This too can get expensive, but it does work.

    You can buy FNM ammo for about $12 for 20 rounds. It is reloadable as well. I bought some Norma when I first got mine, this ammo is about a third the price. I load for mine. It is cheap as it use .308" diameter bullets.

    The base Diameter of 308 and 30-06 is 473 not 465. If your looking for some 284 brass, I have some.

    Terminalogy Buck, although you did point out a typo (which I copied) in Donnelly's book for me, thanks I'll correct it.
    The RIM diameter is .473, the BASE (or head) diameter is .470.
    Rim is behind the extractor groove, base/head is in front of it.
    The 284 Win has a rim of .473, and a head of .500

    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    Well, honestly, it is getting easier and cheaper to find ammo. I recently bought 500 unprimed pieces of new brass from Graf & Sons for $107.96 plus shipping, and it's available in 100 round lotsl for $23.99. They also sell reasonably priced factory new loaded ammo, but I didn't try any, as I'd rather roll my own. If you're not familiar with Graf their number is 1-800-444-9360. They are having their brass made overseas somewhere, but declined to tell me where. They currently have brass for several obsolete military calibers, including 7.62x54 Russian, 7.65x53 Argentine, and 6.5 x52 Carcano. They tell me that they will have 8x56R Hungarian, 6.5x50 Jap, and 7.7x58 Jap sometime early next year. Anyway, yes, the rifle can be rebarrelled, but the cost of a new barrel and labor when weighed against the improving ammo situation makes it impractical; and there is nothing wrong with the original Swiss round which has a reputation for accuracy.

    i've seen these that were rebarreled to .308 and some that had the chamber sleaved and then rechambered to .30/30 (i don't recomend this) but it was done by one of the importers (interarms??) in the 1960's.

    there was a gunsmith in PENN. that rechambered these in .30-30 WCF. i have not seen one in years, though. best regards, mike.
