Mini-14 - newly inherited. need help
I just inherited a stainless mini 14 with wood stock and barrel shroud. The serial number starts with 181 - which I believe put the manufacture at 1981. This gun has not been shot in years.
Should I have it serviced? How much is it worth? Can I put a scope on it?
Or should I just go shoot it? I got some 30 and 40 round mags as well.

Henri..... Just give it a good cleaning and take it out and shoot and enjoy it.
It does not need to be serviced unless there is something wrong with it. You can function test it, and make sure the safety works, then blast away. The safety is the tab at the front of the trigger guard, pull it back to put on safe, and push forward for off safe. It will not go on safe unless it is cocked.
The 181 in the serial number is actually a series number and not necessarily the year it was made.
I have a 180 series gun with the wood front handguard and the older style bolt hold-open mechanism, and a couple 182 series guns.
Those rifles will last for years, and for informal target shooting and plinking they are loads of fun.

if the mags are Ruger( stamp on them) they are worth quite alot and are hard to come by 0 -
Thanks guys. Any good accessories you can reccommend?
