Dummy Receiver Screw Replacements?

I removed a scope and weaver scope base from my Marlin 336 last night (I am going to be adding a tang sight). Anyway, the receiver came drilled and tapped from the factory with four dummy receiver screws in the holes. I removed those dummy screws to mount the weaver base and used the screws that weaver provided. Well, I lost those four dummy screws. My question is, do I need to replace those screws?

I can see the bolt through the holes, but I can't imagine that it would be a safety issue - but I still want to check. It would definately look better if I had the screws in, but aside from that, is it safe to leave those holes open?

    They do not have to be there, but it is one more way for grunge to get into the receiver, and if you ever sell the rifle, it would be nice to have them in. Try Brownells, they have them, and you can likely also get them from Marlin. I got some for a 94 from Winchester.

    "...four dummy screws..." Nothing dummy about them. They set screws used to fill the tapped hole and protect the threads. Brownell's I think.

    Yes, they are dummy screws and they're called dummy screws. They don't have a dog or point on the end and they are short, just made to fill the hole and protect the thread and anything underneath.

    When you re-install them, degrease the screws and holes with some lacquer thinner (or any other good degreaser), and then apply some blue Loctite (#242) to the threads. This will prevent the screws from vibrating out from firing, or from vibrating inward into the action; but they can be deliberately unscrewed again if you or another owner decides to remount a scope.
