22 mag Revolver short bbl
[8D] I have a question, I have a Colt Trooper Mk III in .357 and .22lr is six inch that shoot real well wanted all three alike but so far only found a 4" in the .22 mag. It has a real nice balance as the others do, but it won't group anywhere near the .22lr. or .357 have any of you had experience with short bbl'd 22 mag revolvers? I was wondering if 4"s of bbl was not enough for the .22mag. [:(] I would like to find a cherry 6" Trooper to add to the collection and maybe a nice 4" Diamond Back. My thoughts were it was the short bbl. Hell my old 2" mod 10 shoots better. The trooper is like new,but I was very disappointed with the performance. I guess what I'm basically asking is does the 22 mag need a longer bbl. to be accurate? Is 4"s not enough to stablize the bullits? ...I'm open to input,this is a very nice revolver and bringing some preminm prices in some parts of the country,anyone else run into this problem with this calibre in the shorter bbls. Great signature line!
Colt usually makes very accurate firearms, regardless of caliber; that's one reason they are priced so high.
I have a relatively cheaply made Taurus Model 941 in 22WMRF that will pop a zit on a gnat's nose at 50 yards with Win. Super X ammo, and it's only got a 2" barrel. I also have a pair of AMT Automag ll's with 4" & 6" barrels that are much more accurate than the Taurus.
I think it might be the CCI ammo (I think) you're using that could be the source of your inaccuracy.
2", 4" & 6" barrels are a little short for longer range shooting, but then the bullet will go in the direction it's pointed, regardless.
You might try cleaning the bore with a copper solvent to see if that helps your shooting; otherwise, I'd call the Colt junk & send it to me for disposal[;)]

The problem with .22 mag is that it was not designed for use in ANY pistol, let alone one with a 4" barrel; it was designed for use in rifles. It has a slow burning powder that requires a LONG barrel in order to burn completely & generate the impressive statistics that have impressed medium range varmint hunters over the years. In a short barrel, muzzle energy & velocity are little better than those of a .22 LR. I fired a .22 mag derringer, & saw a muzzle flash almost a foot long --- that's caused by the unburned gases trailing the bullet as it leaves the muzzle.
Go to a 6" barrel if you want, but don't expect much improvement.

Try different ammo before you give up on the gun. Rimfires are sometimes very picky about ammo.

[:D] [:D] Thanks for the flowers on the sign, --the first part is from Norman Vincent Peale the last part about prison was my addition. I know why you think I was using CCI ammo I tried all brands in my Marlin 883 and the CCI wouldn't shoot worth a hoot. the winchester ammo shot best. so i have no CCI 22 mag ammo in my selection. maybe thats the problem .I do know a friend who had the same model rifle that shot CCI V+ stuff real well and it was the worst in mine, every rifle is a little different . I was only shooting the thing at 25yds and under,maybe it would like the CCI, haven't trued it. I was concerned if the bbl was long enough to stabilize the bullit. when the weather breaks i'll have to force my self to buy some CCI and some of the newer stuff and play a little more [;)] allways need an excuse to play..[;)]

[:D] [:D] Neal you want to see a muzzle flash get a 14" Contender in .35 Remington and light that up a bit before dusk ....now thats amuzzle flash ..but it is still as accurate as or better than the rifles..[;)]

nmyers you are right about the muzzle flash.
I have one of the old High Standard derringers in .22 mag, what a great little pistol. About 20 years ago I read an article about these pistols. The author found out that a lot of NY city detectives were carrying these for backup. He pointed out to a NY cop that due to the short barrel there was almost no increase in foot pounds over the .22 LR. The cop said, Yeah, we know that, but with the mag, if you shoot at night and miss, the muzzle flash will scare the crook to death.0 -
I have a cheap gun..it is a 3 inch snubby charter arms. It groups
horrible with the CCI hollow points. However the CCI full metal jacket groups just dandy. It also does excellent with the winchester
Full metal jacket. Dont, be thinking a full metal jacket will not expand in a 22 mag..they are lead on the inside..they deform just fine and give excellent penetration. I shoot my Farmraised hogs in the head with these rounds..NO prob..Right between the eyes..they just lay down...no kicking whatsoever..The 22 mag is a heck of a gun..And mine is a snubby..0 -
I have a short barreled Colt Trooper in 22 mag. also.It is very picky about which ammo it likes but can be very accurate with a load it prefers.One of the problems with rimfire ammo is that it varies greatly from manufactured lot to lot even of the same brand. What I do is buy several different types and shoot for groups. Then I try to stock up on ammo that is from the same lot number that shot well.--Good Luck........... [:)] 0
