.22 mag vs .17 hmr

I'm just looking for some thoughts on these two calibers. I'm thinking about buying a Taurus 72. I won't be shooting anything larger than fox, and the range will be 60 to 70 yds.

    At the range you described the 17hmr will be dandy. My brother owns one and loves it. I have made long shots on coyotes and javalina at 125 yards with success, with the 22mag,and therefore do not care to switch. I am sure that the 17hmr is a great caliber. The only way I would switch from a 22 mag is if they gave me a 17remington, or 22 hornet. That would be a substantial improvement. Otherwise I am keeping my magnum.

    Great round as well as accurate, but I'd be hesitant about purchasing one. Just think about the Remington 5mm mag and the price of ammo. The 17 could be another 5mm mag in a few yrs.

    My hunting partner has one. Great that little 17 hmr. I like it but perfer centerfire so I can reload in case the ammo gets rare.

    Either of these should be just fine... Along with .221, .222, .223, .22-250, .220 swift (my favorite) but some of these will be a little more than you need for that size animal at those ranges.

    [?] [?] Ask your self do you really want to spend more for the ammo for a gun that will do less. 22 mag ammo will be found at almost any shop. don't count on the 17HMR. another thought, are you hunting these fox for the hides or just sport? a lighter faster bullit can do more hide damage depending where its hit. At the ranges you mentioned it would make little killing difference,either would fill your bill..me i'll take the 22 mag ...heaveir game at longer range..[;)]

    Clare Reese just did a comparison between the .22 WMR and the .17 HMR in this month's issue of Rifle magazine. His conclusion - the .17 HMR was the better of the two.

    I was thinking of swapping my 22 mag rifle for the 17, but at 100 yards, the 22 mag will do everything the 17 will do, and its about three dollars a box cheaper for 50 rounds. I like the heavier bullet of the 22 even though it gives up some velocity to the 17.

    Since you haven't got the rifle yet go with a 10/22 mag or the 10/17 if a bolt may fit in 77/22mag or the 77/17 and get a 2 nd barrel in the other chambering there are several other's you may be able to do the same thing with worth tossing into the mix it what I did to over come the problem

    [?] [?] [?] Never Happen the 17HMR is a great little calibre out to 100yrs on little critters, get anything much bigger than a Groundhog you'll be glad for the heavier bullit. now if Remington brought back the 5mm they both would die.[:D] [:D] [:D] [;)] I'd never give up my 22mag for a pellet gun calibre...Anything it will kill out to 100 I can do with the long rifle 22 [:D]

    I feel anything I can hit at the ranges you describe will die. It's all about bullet placement. 17HMR is a smokin' fast little round, but a 22LR in the right hands is just as deadly. I am a decent shot with iron sights out to 100 yards, I choose a .22 because it's cheap ammo. And everything I've ever deserved to kill out to 100 yards with a .22 has died. You can have the greatest gun on earth but if you can't hit the target it aint' gonna die. I have no qualms with the .17 except ammo prices. Soon enough I'll jump on board for the big win, and buy one, but it's low on the list for me. If I had to choose one it would be a .22
