1873 22 barrel dovetail question
I have a round barrel winchester 1873 22 long with a round barrel. it has two dovetails for the rear sight, or sights. Is this something the factory did for special order? It looks as original as the rest of the gun, does not appear to be done after the fact, both dovetails are about identical. I'm wondering if there are other winchesters like this with two rear sight dovetails. thanks, dave

Hello Dave,
No, that is not something Winchester would have ordinarily done. Is the second dovetail slot in front of the original sight dovetail slot, or behind it? On the extremely rare chance that Winchester did do something to the barrel, it should be marked "J.P.P." somewhere on the barrel. Your best chance of determining if it was factory work/rework, is to contact Waddy Colvert at the Cody Firearms Museum and get a factoy letter for your 1873... it will show if anything unusual was done to it at the factory.
