Diesel fuel...be careful.

This is not exactly the right time of year for this one, but one of the posters here has hung them out on a hot sunny day and let the cosmoline melt and drip off into a pan. Some variation using a hair dryer or other heat source might work to remove the bulk of it.

Try WD-40 on a rag... 0 -
clp breakfree and alot of time, rags, qtips, and patience. This is a good bonding moment. Ah the smell of cosmoline. Nothing like it. wd40 works to. Somone told me you could spray some wd40 then wait a few moments and blow off the cosmo with an air compressor. Good luck.

Depends. Just removing the top cosmo or getting it all out of the stock so it doesn't bleed? For removal, remove all metal and pour boiling water over it; it will flash dry and after a few treatments will get all cosmo out of the workigns. For the stock, wipe as much out with rags as possible, then wipe down with acetone. To get it OUT of the stock, spray with purple power, available from wal mart at the auto section. Let sit, wipe. Spray, let sit, wipe, etc. until no more cosmo runs off. Then pour hot water over the stock and dry. This WIll remove all finish as well as cosmoline. Looks good with an oil finish after this.

All of the previous post work. Military armorers use dry cleaning solvent or gasoline.
May not need to be said, but have ventilation and no open flame.

I use the Walmart foamy engine degreaser on the metal parts. To do the bolt without dissassembly use the smallest possible container that will hold the bolt and let it soak till the cosmoline disintegrates. Then load it up with with any thin oil that penetrates, like Kroil, and let it drain. If the weather is warm I use an old car or truck and put the gun in a pan. 0 -
Orange degreaser from Wal=Mart works too/!

I go down to the Home Depot and buy a couple of gallons of mineral spirits/paint thinner, NOT ACETONE. I then soak the parts in a 5 gallon bucket (I mainly deal with 1911's) for an afternoon in the sun (in Arizona). A little stiff bristle plastic brushing and some air compressor blasting and done deal. Granted a mauser won't fit into a 5 gal, but the action will. In the end though, as much as you hate the cosmoline, its your love for the weapon that will carry you through the ordeal. Trial and error will find your path to clean metal. [;)]Good luck.

Whats next? A ban on automatic transmissions?0 -
A section of rain gutter mounted to a bench with end caps works good to place a barrel and action in to soak in solvent.

When the SKS rifles came out I used to buy them 10 at a time for $69.00 each with free frieght. The only problem was the cosmoline.I found out if I took the guns completely apart and washed the parts in Kerosene it did the best job.Better than Gasoline and a lot less dangerous.Believe me I tried everything and Kerosene works by far the best.

[8D] when i bought my SKS the gunsmith I worked with at the shop gave me some Varsol ??if I spelled it correctly that stuff cleaned 'er up rather well. its' a messy job anyway you do it fer sure. The post on the kero, is probably the easiest way easy to find and not real expensive or dangerous. i've soaked old bolts that were cruded up with old oil in a coffee can for a few day in kero and just shook the can every now and a again and you would not believe what kind of crap it will clean.I also found a cleaner lube mixture online.i haven't tried it but the guy swears bt it to make one gal mix Kerosene 40% 2/5 (.40gal.) mineral spirits 40% 2/5 (.40 Gal.) marvel mystery oil 15% 3/20 (.15 gal) rislone oil 5% 1/5 (.20 qt) in a thick walled HDPE container (heavy plastic bucket) with a good sealing lid. Blued guns can be left in for over a month no prob. NO WOOD STOCKS nickel and Chrome will turn a yellowish cast from the dye in the marvel mystery oil if left in for long periods Long plastic flower planters work well for long guns. after removing allow to drip dry . will leave a light oil flim and displace water the Gentleman with this cleaner lube is Gregory Samplawski 8112 Blossm Ln. Lemon Grove Ca. 91945 I found this searching for info. on the Makarov pistols you may be able to find the whole of the info searching the same If the site is still up. I save the cleaner info. just never got to do the mix yet.[8D] anyone wanting the entire text from the site email me and i'll fwd it.

Hot boiling water with Dawn dish soap works the best of anything I have used. Cleaned several guns that way and I have tried carb cleaner, kerosene, gasoline, diesel fuel, and a host of other products. Hot soapy water has been the best. Just my 2 cents worth but as I stated, I have cleaned many guns caked in cosmoline! After cleaning oil the heck out of everything including the stocks.

strip it down and put all the parts in a commercial parts washer.

For cosmo on the metal, I like Kingsford charcoal starter fluid. And it doesn't hurt to give the bolt a good soak in it either! The only thing is, DO THIS WHERE YOU HAVE GOOD VENTILLATION AND NO SPARKS OR FLAMES!
As for greasy, cosmo-laden wood: Acetone on a rag helps, with the same cautions as above. Then---if you intend to refinish---you can try the 'ol Easy-Off oven cleaner trick (make darned sure it's the Easy-Off that has LYE in it, not that new crapola that uses eludium fosdex or whatever it's supposed to be.) Follow up with a thorough scrubbing with Dawn dishwashing detergent in hot water, with a good thorough rinse. Let dry thoroughly, then sand lightly, treat with lemon oil or stain of your choice, and seal or coat as you please. Me, I use Minwax Spray Polycrylic (NOT Polyurethane, please note.) If finish is too slippery for your taste, rub with a soft cloth moistened (but not dripping) with Windex, then allow it to dry, then test for feel. The Windex will "matte" the Polycrylic finish very slightly, making it less slippery. The stuff seems perfectly capable of standing up to gun solvents once cured, too.0
