Sten MKIII....

Looking for a web site/info. source for the Sten. Too the point, I would like to know what is legal (and what is not). For instance, is it legal to purchase the "Sten Kit", then the receiver(to 80%), complete the unit, and operate in a semi-auto mode?

    Though many people are doing it, to technically be legal, you will need a manufacturer's liscense to finish out the 80% reciever. But thats kind of a grey area.

    You can purchase the kit without restriction but what you do from that point on is subject to a great number of possible pitfalls. An 80% receiver is nothing but a piece of pipe until you decide to turn in into a firearm and producing a legal firearm (but NOT a machinegun) for your own use does not mandate you being a licensed firearms manufacturer, but the resulting firearm cannot be resold to anyone. Producing a semiautomatic STEN from a parts kit is not as easy as it sounds since you will need to remanufacture the entire fire control mechanisim to not only insure ONLY semiautomatic function, but also to allow for ONLY closed bolt operation since open bolt semiautomatics are prohibited under BATFE regulations. You'll also need to purchase and install a 16" barrel from someone to remain outside of the National Firearms Act regulations. This STEN question has come up at least five times over the past year and I have yet to hear of a single person coming back here on Gun Broker to inform us that he has produced this new semiauto STEN from a kit...maybe you'll be the first!

    Dang mark hit it right on the T. All the stuff I was to lazy to think about and type. But he's 100% right. I'd say its totally more trouble than its worth unless you are an experienced machineist/gunsmith, or you just have entirely to much time on your hands.

    www.semiautosten.com has sold hundreds of their semi auto kits in the past year. The kits come with a new bolt, hammer, barrel extension, recoil assembly, receiver tube, etc. Their distributor, Florida Ammo Traders also sells completed semiauto Sten carbines made from MK3 kits.

    no gray area... anyone can legally build any firearm themselves if they can legally posess the finished product. No paperwork, no license, no markings are necessary.
