1880's era black powder

Friend has a late 1880's marlin 40-60. Anyone out there know which cartridge is interchangable with the marlin 40-60??

  "Cartridges of the World" notes that it's the same as the 40-65 Winchester, and it's possible to reform the brass from 45-70 cases.

  rufe snow is correct on both accounts. If you do some serious research, you can find mild smokeless loads safe as substitutes for the original BP loadings. You could use original ammo, but expect to pay an absolute minimum of $4 per round for late date .40-65 WCF loadings and a minimum of $8 a round for any .40-60 Marlin loading - the latter can be as high as $30 per round depending on several factors of interest only to the collector.
