S&W 38 SPECIAL

I need help identifying a gun for a friend. It is a S&W snub-nosed 38 special that is blued with the logo wood grips. My friend has bad eyesight and can't make out the model number on the crane, but he was able to give me the S/N: 302439

Is there any info that can be gathered by just the serial number without knowing the model number? would like to know model, date of manufacture etc. etc..[?][?][?]

    sir, guns made prior to 1957 had no mod. # on crane, also later guns normally have the frame size inc. into serial# example 5k267xx is a k frame gun.search this site under s&w revolvers and compare it to your friends gun.hope this helps
