Inexpensive Red Dots
Wondering what others might have experienced using some of the inexpensive Red Dots out there like those from BSA. Was thinking of getting one for use for rimfire.
Yes I'd like a nicer one (like I have on a couple guns) but was hoping that I could get some mileage from something less expensive for indoor range use.

You know I have to tell you that I'm actually impressed with the little $30 red dot BSA scope I bought from walmart. They run pretty good, but I don't think they are nearly as rugged as a more expensive higher quality red-dot. 0 -
I have used several of the BSA's. They have worked really well for indoor .22. You must make sure the dot is centered because they will shoot a slight angle at times if not.
No luck with a .45. The recoil broke the scope in record time (under 200 rounds). Have not tried this again and not sure "what" broke (Wasn't worth the effort).
OK for just playing, but as you say, not for competition.0 -
I would say the BSA and other lower priced red dots are adequate for your intended usage. They tend to have a halo or flair around the dot in low light which makes fine sighting difficult. Another brand which I just tried that seems to be a real step up is the ADVO. It is quite a bit better than the $30-50 units but costs only around $100.

I have a BSA on my 12 ga. 1187 Turkey gun for 2 years now ,, no problems so far and i think you can say that with 3 inch mag loads it has done really real 0 -
cdnninvestments.com has some NCStar red dots for 18.00, I got a couple for .22 rifles and they do a good job , 7MOA. 20MM. and they got em from that price on up, check em out..

I got one on my NEF R92 target pistol. It works great for me. The only problem I have is I try to shoot beyond the capabilities of the pistol.

Hello, Bushmaster AR15 type rifle in .223, BSA Red Dot scope, under 2 inches at 50 yards, 10 shots. Would have been better if the dot was smaller, it covered the bullseye at that range. Worth the money.

I don't have one on any rifles but I do have the BSA red dot on a movable sight fixture on my compound bow. It took me from a 6 inch group shooter @ 20 yards to 3 inch groups at the same distance.
I also help with a summer camp with kids who do alot of shooting with our three Ruger 10/22's and they each have a Daisy red dot sight atop them that you can buy at Walmart for about $15 each. At 15-20 yards you can shoot quarter size groups and they only take a watch battery (same as the BSA scope). For $15 you should try it!
