international relic import question

I have the opportunity to take a trip to Italy sometime in the future. This chic I know has parents that have a place there. Her Dad was in his teens during WWII and remembers where a few "skirmishes" took place and also where some German's camped for a while.

I plan on rootin around in these areas and my question is, if I happen upon a relic K98, M-1 etc. What chances do I have of getting it home? What do I need to prepare for?

  if you find what is (or was) a firearm forget it. much more hassel than it's worth.

  You have two chances: None, and none.
  
  In the (unlikely) event that you find a "war trophy", you cannot legally bring it home with you. Any attempt to do so could cost you 5 years in a Federal prison.

  Uhhh...so lets say, hypothetically of course, that someone bought a battlefield relic pistol from a guy in eastern europe on eBay and had it shipped here. What are the ramifications of that act? There are actually quite a few non-op relic firearms sold on eBay by foriegners and shipped to the US. Are all of these illegal sales and imports?[B)]

  If it is obviously a relic in rusted/nonfiring condition (frozen rust), there is no problem. Mail it to yourself. On the customs declaration list it as "Broken/inop war relic".
  
  I have had broken antique pistols mailed to me from Canada that were listed plainly on the customs declaration "Broken antique firearm"
  
  NOTE: This goes on the declaration only. The box remains unremarkable.
