S&W 317 22lr

Looking for some information on this pistol with the 3" barrel. My wife thinks she wants a stainless 22 with a "spinny thing". What do you do??? Anyway, I would appreciate any review good and bad on this gun. Thanks

    I would also be interested in other suggestions other than the s&w 317. Im basicly looking for a stainless revolver in 22lr for target shooting and just plinking. Thanks again

    Slave2, Two very different revolvers come to mind and though they are different and appeal for different reasons, they are excellent examples of stainless .22 revolvers:
    Ruger Stainless Super Single Six - Two Cylinders, Standard .22 & .22 Magnum
    Smith & Wesson Model 63 Stainless - Standard .22, Six-shot, Double Action
    The single action Ruger is a little heavier and larger-framed than the S&W and is a great target/plinker and handy to have as a secondary piece to dispatch large and small game. My Ruger is 5-1/2" barrel and handles and shoots very well.
    The S&W is smaller and lighter. Mine has a 4" barrel. My wife prefers the double-action aspect of it as she says she feels better about being able to just pull the trigger and fire away in a crisis situation.
    I highly recommend both or either. Best, Jim

    I'm with timbroman: I took a S&W M63 & slicked it up so my girls could shoot it. I had a gunsmith install a white front sight insert, wide trigger, & Woolf springs, & had him do an action job on it. It is not only accurate, but a delight to shoot.

    Be sure that your wife gets a chance to try the trigger pull on any late-model S&W snubby before you buy; I have tried several that were really difficult to fire.

    I bought a 317 a few months ago on a whim - delightful little wheel gun. Not sure if they are all the AirLite variety or come with fiber optic front sights, but I'd recommend 'em. My wife's only concern was that it looked too much like a toy, kind of plastic-y looking and lightweight. Shoots very well - like that it holds 8 instead of 6. Jim or Neal's suggestions are both good as well, depends upon use and how much you're willing to spend.

    Trigger was a bit stiff before visit to 'smith. Now much better, 2-3 lbs. Have 200 rds or so downrange, still just getting broken in.

    The Smith & Wesson Model 317 is one of my favorite handguns. I have an early 2-inch that has the heavy main spring, but I think the newer ones, especially the 3-inch Kit Gun versions, have lighter springs. I love the light weight and 8 shots.

    The Model 63 mentioned has been discontinued, and is going up in price. The 2-inch Models 63 are quite a bit harder to find, and are more valuable. Models 63 are a lot heavier than the Models 317 and hold only 6 rounds.

    I would recommend the Model 317.

    have you considered the Ruger sp101 in .22lr? I have one and it is a good little gun. Hardly any bigger than the 317, but a little heftier. very nice solid gun. Mine is also for sale.
