target 22

been considering a beretta 89 gold standard or 87 target.....how would either compare to hi standard trophy,s&w 41, cz kadet, buckmark target or others....prefer steel ....never owned a dbl action 22 auto ???? appreciate some advice on buying a ++ quality instead of my closet full of usual mainline 22's.....thanks

    How much do you want to spend? What game are you going to shoot?

    At the low end, I'd suggest a good Ruger Mk-II Government Model, with the 6 7/8" bull barrel for around $300. Ne Mid-level, I'd suggest an IZH-35...these are almost Olympic class guns for cut rate prices (around $350-400); they've got to be one of the best deals around. Above that, I'd suggest a Pardini SP; this is an Olympic class gun that will set you back about $950-1000 for a new one. I considered the Pardini worth it and bought one. If you want to spend more money, there's the Walther GSP (around $1500), and the Feinwerkbau AW93 (also around $1500), that are supposed to be very good, but IMHO, the Pardini is just as good (compared to the Walther I used to own), but a lot cheaper.

    A good bit of this will also depend on what you want to do with it. Do you want to just go plinking on the weekends, or do you plan on doing some serious bullseye shooting or international style ISSF shooting?

    For most target work I prefer the S&W M41, which should be available in the $500 range.

    For training the kids, as well as informal plinking, I like the now-obsolete S&W M422/622.

    Of course, all of mpolans suggestions are good.

    all are good, all are accurate. the idea is to find one that will be both 50 years from now. go with an old pre 76 hi standard. its the only american 22 that has a button swedged bore. www.highstandard.com.

    I can't disagree with mpolens and nmyers advice but as a tyro I think you are best advised to get a basic, reliable and reasonably priced pistol. IMO the products of Ruger best fit that description. Go by a gun shop or gun show and handle some of them. See which weight and grip style suits you best. Expect to pay around $300 for a new blue steel pistol and $75 to $100 more to get a stainless steel version. You can always upgrade to a model with a heavy barrel, adjustable sights, better sights, etc. if you really get into shooting. There are bargains in used guns but I wouldn't advise buying one unless you are buying from someone who stands behind his merchandise. Paying a gunsmith to fix someones attempt to "improve" Good luck on your endeaver.
    You are entering a sport in which you will find fun, challenges and will probably meet some fine people.

    As others have said, it depends on how much precision you are wanting and willing to pay for. In revolvers, the Ruger single Six is an excellent starter and and it seems to be hard to find a bad one and will set you back $250 to 350. The Smith 41 is probably one of the smoothest you'll find, as above. The ruger mark I or II and the Browning Buckmarks come in a variety of flavors and are really pretty much idiot proof and very well made and accurate, again in that $300 to 400 range.

    I like the Buckmark and the Beretta Neos, but my real choice would be a nice older pistol in the Colt Woodsman series.

    I would say the browning buckmark, or you might want to look at the new kimber rimfire, we just got 2 in at the store and they are sweet lil 22's, stainless barrels and aluminum frame and slide.

    I just bought a very nice Ruger Government Target and I am pleased. Great sights and accuracy. It outshoots the Colt Woodsman I use to have.
