Super Redhawk Front Sight
Help! I am shortening a SRH barrel to 5-1/2", The front sight is silver-soldered on. How do I re-solder it without causing structural damage to the Stainless? The solder requires The barrel to be heated to about 1200 degrees.
I have a machinist friend who is going to teach me enough to cut and crown the barrel, but he has no experience silver-soldering stainless, nor do I.

PS: How about drilling and tapping two screws through the sight and into the barrel?

you may want to take a look at the front sight for the super blackhawk with the 10 1/2" barrel these are screwed on other wise find a good gunsmith that does this type of work 0 -

I can't really answer your question on that but do know anytime you heat metal that hot you had better know what you are doing, at the least you may not get a very good bond so the sight may come off during recoil you may discolor the barrel , you could screw up the barrel so its not safe to shoot 0 -
I have the good fortune to have a pro to instruct me on the soldering, but he is a pipefitter, not a gunsmith. He would like to know the procedure used to cool the barrel afterward,(how hot, how long,etc) to keep the integrety of the stainless. The refrigeration he is used to don't approach the pressures in a gun barrel.

Well, I got her done. Got the sight on without too much trouble. It looks good, got it all buffed out. Will try it tomorrow in daylight. The gun really looks good with the shorter barrel. That Brownell's Heat Stop REALLY works. The front of the bbarrel was hot enough to make the silver solder run really good, and the other end was cool enough to hold.

wow that sounds realy nice !! can I ask why you did this to the SRH instead of just getting a Redhawk with the 5 1/2" barrel,, I'm just curious 0 -
Why? good question. I had an extra barrel, and wanted to know if I could do it. Now I have a SRH that is a lot easier to carry, and I did it myself. I guess that is as close as I can answer.

I didn't have time to put her through her paces, but I did shoot it. It seems to shoot alright.
