Is there any difference in parts between the rifle and the carbine?

Most of the parts interchange. There are some tolerance differences, primarily with receivers which may vary up to 1/8". On the SKS-M/D the gas tube is shorter and the triggergroup is different. On some paratroopers the gas tube is shorter as well.

Weren't some paratrooper models reconfigured to accept AK type magazines? I swear I recall seeing them way back when, or maybe I just have a bad memory. or both...

Yep, the SKS-D and SKS-M models. There's also a MC-50 version that takes AK mags as well.

Recon5, got your e-mail. Which part are you wondering about on the paratrooper? I have both the regular paratroopers and the M-models so if you need any dimension or interchangability info let me know.
