Obregon pistol

I am doing some research on a family heirloom. We have an Obregon pistol and I'd like to know as much as possible about it. Value, history, etc. Or any clues where I can research this. Gun is complete in working order, clips, and holster, used but actually quite nice.

    A few (800 - 1,000) were manufactured at the National Arms Factory (Fabrica Nacional de Armas Mexico) in Mexico City during the 1934 - 1938 time period. The pistol was designed by Alejandro Obregon and a Mexican Patent obtained in 1934, with a U.S. Patent issued in 1938. It differs from the Colt 1911 design by having a rotating barrel.

    I have no idea of the value but it is a rare piece

    11.35mm caliber, patterned after the Colt Model 1911A1, with a tublar slide and a Steyr type action. Slide marked "Sistema Obregon Cal 11.35mm." Value is greatly dependant upon condition and for this one you need an expert eye. about $1500 60% to $5000 100% condition.

    A little background....in the early '20's Mexico adopted the M1911 as it's official sidearm. These were manufactured by Colt from 1921 to 1927 and are known as the "Mexican Contract" M1911s.

    "Colt M1911 MEXICAN: After WW I, Mexico procured an unknown number of
    M1911 pistols made by Colt. These are rare because of Mexico's strict penalties for illegal possession of military arms (ON SPOT EXECUTION). Very few made it to U.S. and would have a "C" prefix serial numbers. May have "EJERCITO MEXICANO" on right side of slide."

    I believe that the Obregon was designed and built in hopes of having a Mexican-made pistol to replace the Colts. Whether this was at the request of the Mexican Government or entirely a private venture, I have no idea....but in any case, the only legal sales would have been to either the police or Mexican Army officers.

    "OBREGON --- Previously maufactured by Fasbrica de Armas Mexico located in Mexico City, Mexico.

    ll.35mm cal., patterned somewhat after the Colt Model 1911A1, features tubular slide and Savage/Steyr type action, 1,000 pistols mfg. in Mexico for commercial sale during and after WWII, slide marked "Systema Obregon Cal 11.35mm".

    70% - $2,250
    60% - $1,750"

    Looks like you've got a rare piece there....you're a lucky guy!
