Seems that's a good price. 7.65mm pistols are far less common than 9mm P-38s, and if I read the Blue Book correctly he should be asking more for it; although, like the books says, the value of P-38s in general has gone down somewhat due to all of the recent imports. Yes it is a cute little round, but expensive, unless you reload. I've got a couple of 7.65 mm Lugers, and they work well on small stuff.

Here's a little "tough love": Save your money!

Yes, it may be a good buy, but that's a lot to tie up in something you don't need. Collectors of post-war Walthers aren't that numerous; you may find it difficult to sell if you ever want to. Since it's NIB, you won't want to shoot it, since that would lower any possible collector value.

And, none of the P38s are fun to shoot. Bad trigger, bad sights, tough to recover fired cases; who needs the aggravation?

    Thanks nmeyer and Der Gri
I'm in N.Illinois and the gun is at a dealer who's in a town going through hard times. That's why it's a little under priced;laid off steelworkers don't want to pay $30 a box for a round that won't reliably kill a rabbit. On the plus side, my dad brought home a good Walther P38 from WW2 and I've always loved and owned PP and PPk's The dealer would probably take $450 so I may need some real tough love. Thanks again.

nmyers: Sorry you've had a bad experience with P38's, but I have had just the opposite with a "surplus" P1 I recently purchased. I have found it to be a wonderful pistol.. I only paid $299 for it, and it is as accurate and functions as well as my Sig P239. The P1's have white sights (which I think the older P38's don't) and I think it's the best pistol bargain out there. My Uncle had a P38 "years" ago and I loved shooting it. Perhaps you just got a "bad one". Of course opinions are like, well you know, we all have one. Best Wishes
