Older mini-14s
Were the older SS mini-14s (183-xxxxx) made with a higher polished finnish. I've seen a SS 183-xxxxx (standard) and a SS 188-xxxxx (ranch) side by side and the older is much shinner and the action is smoother. Both are pre-AWB manufactured so its not like one is new production vs old/early production. The owner stated that both have been fired close to the same amount.[?]

I don't own one in the 183-series, but I own two in the 180-series and one in the 181-series, and they definately look better than what I see on the "for sale" racks today. However--let me point one thing out--they always had circular tool (turning) marks on the barrel, and it was my understanding that this was intentional as they are present on the M14 military rifle, and it was Ruger's intention to make veterans who were familiar with the M14 a big part of his market; the theory being that the overall appearance of the rifle would play on nostalgia. But, as for the polish, my answer is yes. 0
