Mossberg 12Ga Slug Barrel Question on Size

I have been looking into buying a slug barrel for my Mossberg 500. I have a browning, but I have decided to use my mossberg for slugs. I was wondering about a barrel I have found up for sale. The barrel is 18.5 inches long. That seems short, is it ok for the barrel to be short? Whats the difference between a rifled barrel in the short ones versus the longer barrels? I have seen some that are 21 and 24 inches. What is the best?

  If you look at factory slug ballistics, you'll find almost all companies use 30" barrels! We use 26" Hasting Heavy barrels on our 870 slug guns and 27" on our Mauser bolt guns (rifled of course). Both will group under 5" at 200 when set up right. Other things to consider are scope mounting (can the mount move or be shifted? even a couple thousands of an inch is a big deviation at 150 yards!), is the gun shootable for you (stock at proper height for scope use, trigger decent)and what loads does it shoot best. The buy a case and shoot your gun a bunch, the more rounds you practice with, the better you will know your gun. Good luck!
