Help 7mm08 or 308

I was looking at buying a Tikka 595 sporter in 7mm08 or 308. The gun is a heavy barrel 23.5 inch. It will be used mostly for long range target and some varmit shooting. No larger game, I'm buying this gun only for this purpose. My first instinct says 7mm08, however I have a little voice in my head saying 308 308. Please help me decide.

    Based on you specific use stated, the 7mm-08 would probably edge out the .308. It is just as or more accurate than the .308 and there is less recoil. If this was to be a shooter/plinker/battle rifle, then the .308 would be obvious.

    I have both calibers - 308 is more variable to handloads. Also, you can get ammo in any out of the way back woods store.

    Based on your purposes, 7mm-08. It's an inherently more accurate cartridge, and it has less recoil. Honestly, you might even want to look into some other ones, like 6mm PPC, .22 PPC, etc.

    Of course, I'm assuming you have no qualms about reloading. If you do, you're pretty much restricted to 7mm-08, and if you're in the middle of nowhere, .308 due to ammo availability. But really, for the purposes you're describing I don't see how you could NOT reload.

    Go with the 308. The 7mm-08 gained it's fame in the Silouhette(sp) shotting games and not the paper punching target shooting games. More bullet weights available in 30 caliber. Using the scenario of what others posted, go with the 243 as it should be even more accurate then the others if were going to use the smaller in diameter you go the more accurate it is theme. They are all based on the same case and the 308 will beat the others hands down in the accuracy department.

    Thanks guys this is the kind of info I need. Aglore, I understand what you are saying about the fame of the 7mm08 and silouhette shooting. So are you saying the 308 is more accurate than the 7mm08, it's just the substained energy the 7mm08 keeps further out that made it popular in silouhette shooting? This gun will be mostly for target shooting, maybe that might include silouhette. I have a lot of smaller cal.(223, 220 swift, 22-250, 6mm, 243) so I don't really need this for varmit, but I might use it. Thanks

    [}:)] [}:)] [:D] It would appear to me as you already have a 22 250 this is just an excuse to purchase another rifle [;)] your covered go with the 7mm 08 ...and tell your wife its' another investment..[:D]

    Get the 7mm/08, you're gonna handload anyway and ballistic coefficients are higher for 7mm bullets.

    7-08's inherent accuracy, and better BC's it has a slight edge over the .308.
    .308 has had much more work on it because it's been around longer, and is a NATO round.
    If buying off the shelf ammo,...308 has a lot more choices.
    If reloading, or having reloading done for you, personally like/use the 7-08 better.

    How about a Sako (Tikka"s Momma) in a 308 caliber. Look at GB Item #14433908.[:D]

    I have one and it shoots great. Very loud with a strong push for recoil. This one should be unbelivably loud with a mild push.

    I have a .308 and its very accurate and if you ever decide to hunt Elk most Guides would recommend the .308 as the minimum to make a clean kill.If you show up with a 7mm-08 you may get turned away.Now for white tail and most other Deer sized game its a great gun,and I admire its accuracy.Good Luck!!
