new bullets

i was watching tv and the show was about bullets and how they have evolved. it was on the history channel. has anyone seen the eight metal bullet? the show said it could sense if what it was striking and either go thru it (metal), or explode if it was fleshy. i guess my question is, wouldn't they blow up while you are loading your gun with them as they would sense that your fingers are warm? the show said the bullet would expand up to 300 time upon sensing flesh. pretty crazy,huh?

    I saw the segment and it is the first I've heard of it. However, you can bet this will be "LEO only" production because of its AP properties, with production / distribution very closely controlled. Technically, civilian posession of US made military 7.62x51 AP ammo is a violation of GCA68, as amended. Likewise sale of any handgun ammo, of any vintage, which is AP capable (there have been prosecutions for sales of certain foreign 9mmP types, largely Central European, with mild steel cores).

    Do you mean to tell me that if I had some AP projectiles, I couldn't load them in my 308, just because somebody has a handgun in 308? How about my 300 Winmag?

    vetrider if your talking about the Frangible bullets you have the scenario backwards I believe. Explode upon contact with metal and penetrate flesh but not exit. Designed this way so that there would/could not be a riccochet/innocent bystander.

    snowtigger: No, only that it's technically illegal to posess / sell US made 7.62x51 AP ammo (or any other than ball, for that matter) as none was ever legally released to the public. To my knowledge, this has never been enforced, but the ruling is in the ATF regs and caused quite a stir in collector circles in the 1970s. Since the "Cop Killer Bullet" legislation, importation / sale of handgun ammo intended for, or having bullet designs capable of, AP function is also illegal. However, if, for example, you use some surplus AP bullets in your .308 or other loads, you are fine.

    Allen, vetrider's synopsis is correct - it was quite a startling demo to see a bullet punch through steel plate and then absolutely shred a large roast without exiting. Purpose is to penetrate a vehicle / body armor and then destroy the body behind the barrier(s). It's absolutely certain these loads, if ever produced for sale, will be controlled as tightly as hand grenades. A perp using this ammo could take down any LEO in his sights. Even though military / LEO ammo is my collecting specialty, I don't think I'd want to be found with even a single specimen in my collection. This one is nasty and frightening.

    These high-tech schemes for "smart" bullets have been tested for at least 30 years. None of them ever make it to production. They all have 2 things in common: they cost millions of dollars, & are always funded by the taxpayers.

    Remember: Government doesn't HAVE any money; government is just a mechanism for re-distributing OUR money.

    I personally think that by using the word "sense" they gave the wrong preception. They should have said something along the lines of, "The bullet is designed to react this way upon impacting a soft tissue and that way upon impacting a solid object." By using the word "sense" they make is sound as though the bullet has the ability to think and decide, which it does not.

    There are real smart projectiles. Mostly use in various types of large bore artiliary and such. Projectiles with electronic altitude sensors and such that are designed either to detonate over or withing proximity of a target. That is a smart projectile. I would say that a projectile with a mechanical altimitor device is borderline smart projectile, but it still does not have the capability to decide yes or no.

    So the TV will call a blended metal projectile a smart projectile, they also called that moron in washington dc who decided to shoot people at close range with a rifle a serial "sniper". Just goes to show you how media over dramatizes everything. Buncha drama queens those news stations are.
