Chinese Norinco with DP
Have a Norinco SKS with serial number 22000876. Found out this was made in 1978. Previous owner had little info on it. Does anyone know what the letters DP stand for that are on the right side of the receiver after 4 Chinese symbols and then comes the serial number. This Norinco does not have a triangle factory code. There are alot of questions on other boards about this DP mark and no one seems to know what it stands for. My local FFL thought it stould for Drill Purpose that I might have bought a wall hanger but this gun shot very nice. Your help is appreciated.

Unfortunately there isn't any central record of serial numbers and dates for the Norinco SKS's. They were made in several different plants in China and each plant just ran their guns and slapped serial numbers on them. In fact several SKS's with the exact same numbers were found to have been imported over time into the US. The Customs and ATF had the importers start adding a letter code after the serial number after a while to try and keep their numbers unique.
The Norinco SKS's were imported by a number of different importers over the years as well, so again a unified list is not available even as to show when they were imported. The Russian and Romanian SKS's were marked with their date of production. The Russian usually had it on the top cover, but not always. The Romanian had the date of production as the last part of the serial number sequence. With the Norinco's you can't even be sure that it is a pre-ban just because it might have the bayonet lug. Unlike the AK's from China that had their bayonet lugs ground off after the ban, the Norinco SKS's still had their bayonet lugs left on them up through 1993-94. The Norinco SKS's were not allowed to have the bayonets on the gun after November of 1990. They just shipped the SKS's with a bayonet in the box or not depending on the importer. They just didn't come attached. Many people purchased bayonets afterwards and put them on their SKS's. They wanted one on there and the lug was there so why not? The Ak's couldn't have them after March of 1989. Without a bayonet lug, there wasn't much of a problem of people easily adding them to their AK without a lot of effort.
The feautures of the milled trigger guard and screwed in barrel would possibly indicate an earlier production model, but they were made that way for almost three decades. If it has all matching numbers and has a pinned barrel and a stamped trigger guard it would most likely be from the 1980's or 1990's. If the numbers are mixed it could be a arsenal refurb from several time periods. If it has a combination of stamped trigger guard with a screwed in barrel, or a milled trigger guard with a pinned barrel it could be a transition piece or a refurb, its hard to say.

I'm with you... No history on any Norinco SKS, just a well made rifle that you should be able to shoot for a long time...

I found that it was made in 1978 and as this Norinco is one of the paratroopers without a triangle factory mark that's all I know so far. I have seen alot of questions as to the DP that is marked on the right side of the receiver after 4 Chinese symbols then the serial number. Anyone know what the DP stands for.
