I have inherited the subject handgun and am looking for the history. It is a 4" barrel, blued, s/n 58425 and does not have a model no. marking on it.

I have not requested research from the S&W web site yet.

Any help is appreciated.

    I meant to add - I was told all these years it is a pre-WWII model. I am looking for the value as well. The condition, estimated by the local gun artisan here, is at 95-98%. Thanks.

    No, the person that looked at it told me S&W did not offer a magnum until after WWII, so you can see what I was dealing with...not that he is at ther authority or only resource I have though.

    The gun looks very similar to the photo posted, but the barrel is 4". I am in the process of cleaning it and will post a photo once complete. The grips are stag that my Grand dad put on when he bought it. I don't have the original wood ones. I don't have it in front of me, but the front site has a brass "pin-sized" dot on it. The "artisan" here also told me he could not find a model number anywhere on it, so he defaulted to the M27, but I don't think that is correct.

    Yes, the S/N is on the base of the butt, and it is on the frame behind the cylinder.

    That is very welcome news. I don't intend to keep it and will be looking to sell it soon. Unfortunately, I have no idea where the grips are, and I know the box is not in existance.

    I will be getting the S&W letter for sure now. Thanks again.

    After a thorough cleaning, I found REG 4559 under the cylinder barrel. Based on what you stated, SaxonPig, this would mean that this is a "Reg Mag", correct?

    It appears you have a registered Magnum.If I were you I'd get a S&W Factory letter first cost $30.00 and a professional apparisal.
