DOM for S&W
Anyone give me a DOM for S&W Model 41 serial 495XX. It's the long barrel comp model. The box is real old so my guess is that it might be almost as old as I am [:D]

Your gun sounds like one of the early 41's with the 7 3/8' barrel with muzzle brake.
With no letter prefix in the ser number indicates it was made between 1954 and 1970, probably in the early 1960's. So, were you born in the 60's?

The box had company information printed inside with a date of 1955. Would that make it earlier?

Usually the printed info pamphlets that come with the guns are used for several years until new updated designs are printed, so your gun was for sure made after 1955.
My ref material does not give exact dates for any specific number, just a range for a group of numbers and a corresponding group of years.
I will still say that it was likely made in the early 60's.

Laredo Lefty,
I found a date stamp on the inside of the box cover, but the third digit of the year is completely blocked. Being that it is rather rounded my guess is more a 6 than a 5 and the last digit is 5, so it does look like 65. Not nearly as old as me but that's ok...[;)]
Thanks for your help!

The Model 41 was introduced in 1957, but all S&W boxes carried the 1955 'Statement of Liability' until the mid 60's.
Until 1970 all S&W autoloaders (Models 39,41,44,46&52) were numbered in the serial range from 1001-115000 which makes guessing at production dates for a given model a little tricky.
If the gun was made prior to 1965, the original box would have a solid silver (gray) border and in the lower right corner of the top it would have 'Smith & Wesson, Inc.-Sprinfield Mass. printed on two lines. That box would look similar to this one.....
If it's post-1965, it would have a third line that says 'A Bangor Punta Company' and may also have a broken line for the border.
You can call S&W at 1-800-331-0852 to get the year of production for your gun. All they need is the serial number.[8D]
