onsetbay,Its funny you should metiom this particular shotgun,we had a post while back and I mention this was the only gun that ever hurt me,my Dad still has his he has been offered 1000.00 for his gun,I think in excellent condition, around 1000-1200,No other 10ga's in Lever is one reason. This is not a reason but a cut down version was used in T-2 by the now Gov of Califorbaneverythingia, There are some real experts on this sight who undoubtbly provide you with the essentials.,Its a great Goose and duck gun that for sure........

You have some good information, but it is mixed up. Winchester made 2 lever action shotguns, the Md 1887 and the Md 1901, an improved version of the 87, made for smokeless powder.
Md 1887 serial numbers were 1 to about 64000
Md 1901 serial numbers started at 64856 to about 79000. only about 13500 Md 1901s produced.

So since you say your serial number is 19003, this has to be a Model 1887, that was made in 1889. Not knowing your definition of excellent, this gun is 115 years old, and was made for black powder shells, which usually means the bore is pitted and rough, common on older black powder guns. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and maybe it is in excellent condition, the first thing that comes to mind, is that it was restored/reblues at sometime.

If it was at 90% original condition around $2500
    70% " " " $1600
    40% " " " $750

If it was "restored/reblued about half of the above values. If you can take pictures of all the markings?stampings, I can tell you if it is truely original and give you a better idea of it's value.
Just reread the winchester book, and the 87 had a "case colored" receiver, not blued. It also states that 10 ga, started with serial number 22148.

If it is a 10ga, and the gun says model 1901, the serial number must be 79003, which would be one of the last ones made. Which means it was made in 1920, for modern ammo. both guns have a 2 7/8 in chamber.
Value for a 1901 in original condition,
    90% $2500 plus
    70% $1750
    40% $1200

Hope this helps you. Regards Dave

Would like information on a Winchester Lever Action 10ga. Shotgun.
30" barrel, Mfg 1887-1901, Serial# 19003(early).Model 1901, The side plate has an ingraving spelling out R A , under the lever it states Manufactured by the
    WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO
    NEW HAVEN, CONN. U. S. A.
    PAT. FEB. 16 JULY 20 1886

    The condition is excellent.
    What year was it manuf.?
    Any thing special about it?
What should I look for to establish value?
    Ball Park value?

    Hello onsetbay...

You do not have a Model 1901 based on that serial number... it is a Model 1887, and it was manfactured late in the year 1888. The Model 1901 was a continuation of the Model 1887 and the serial numbers for it started at 64,856.

The Model 1887s were made with case color hardened frames, and the Model 1901s were blued. What type of finish does your 1887 have on the frame? Also, the 1887 was strictly a blackpowder shell gun, while the 1901 was made specifically for smokeless powder shells.

Both the Model 1887 and 1901 are VERY desirable, and are highly sought after by bothe Collecters and Cowboy Action Shooters. If your 1887 is in factory original condition, it is a "Collector's" gun, and the value can be quite high (a friend of mine bought one last year that is in 90%+ original graded condition, and he paid $4800 for it). If it is not factory original, it will have more value as a "shooter" to one of those goofy Cowboy Shooters (likely at least $1000 if it is in perfect mechanical condition and looks good). The absolute lowest price that I see on one of these anymore is about $750, and that is a hard find. If possible, send me a few pictures of it.

Sorry to see that you have such a low opinion of us "goofy cowboy shooters."
Very, very few of us are goofy enough to shoot the old levers.....to big and too slow.I don't see 1 in 200 shooters with one on the line.
I do see 'em for sale at the prices mentioned, but they don't go home very often.I think the market overestimates their value to the goofy cowboy shooters.(who shoot '97'by the hundreds,if not thousands.)
Well, gotta go.Got some goofy loads to get loaded for my goofygun.:)

Throckmortons' the alias, cas is the game.

    Hello Throckmorton...

I do NOT have a low opinion of you fellows, and I sincerely appologize if it appeared that way. What I was trying to say (not so well I guess) is that you folks have a propensity for dressing a bit funny[:D]

As for the greater number of Model 1897s in use by you fellows, that is simply because over 1 MIILION of them were made versus the 65,000 or so Model 1887s. Also, the survival rate on the 1897s is significantly higher due to the use of smokeless powder shells versus the blackpowder used by the 1887s. The recent Tom Selleck movie "Monte Walsh" has (at least temporarily) caused a higher amount of interest in the Model 1887 as well.

Even as just a 'middle of the pack' shooter i'd pass on the big ol' lever guns just 'cause I'm slow enough on my own.:)

Is it ok to shoot smokeless powders (modern shells) in these shotguns? Not that I ever shoot it, but my dad handed one of these down to me. I have only shot it one time.

In the Model 1901 you can shoot "smokeless powder", but remember the chamber is only 2 7/8s. The 1887 was for black powder, that's why they came out with the 1901, for smokeless. regards Dave
