M1 Garand odd marking?

My Dad asked me a question about his Garand today and I need the help of the Garand brains in this forum. His rifle is a 1942 SA weapon with S/N 883322 or something like that. But, there is an "A" stamped to the lower right of the s/n that is obviously much more recent than the serno. Still shiny silver metal. What is this? Please, even just educated guesses may help steer us in the right direction and give my dear old dad some peace of mind.     if you don't get an answer here, try http://www.thehighroad.org. Somebody on the rifle forum there will know. There's also a forum called "jouster" I believe that is dedicated to Garands Look thru the threads at THR. Somebody's got it listed there right now..HTH

    There were several duplications of serial numbers during WWII production. Duplicate series of numbers were given to both Springfield Arsenal and Winchester. When duplicates were discovered, one of the rifles was stamped with a suffix, usually an "A" in order to differenciate between the two.

    Winchester duplicated Springfield Armory serial numbers 1357474 through 1387xxx (approximately 30,000 rifles.

    I've got a picture of the serno and the mark in question. How do I add it to my post? The s/n isn't within the range that EOD GUY gave me. We are really curious to know.

    Your serial number would indicate a production date at SA somewhere around October, 1942. There were no Winchester M1 service rifles within this particular serial number range as WRA blocks ran out at 165,500 and did not resume again until 1,200,001. The intricate picture posting drill all seems to revolve around sending your photo to an out-sourced hosting site somewhere, posting it there, and then linking it back to us here on Gun Broker. Exactly how all of this is done is well beyond my very limited computer skills.

    I would strongly suggest the you go to the Garand Board at the Culver Shooting Pages. There are a lot of Garand collectors that post there regularly.
