I'm not aware of them being offered in nickel but I'm not aware of much[;)] That's a decent price on a M27, I bought a M28 w/6" barrel for $225 awhile back and was tickled pink. The M27 carries a bit of a premium over the M28 model.

They were offered in nickel but this was discontinued in the latter half of the 1980's if I remember correctly.

I'm not aware that S&W offered checkering as an option, but it certainly could have been special-ordered.

However, if the work was done by an after-market gunsmith, it could be a problem gun, for 2 reasons: First, it may not function properly as plated guns are manufactured to slightly different tolerances to compensate for the thickness of the plating. Second, if the surface was not properly prepared the plating may flake or peel.

Without documentation that the work was done by S&W, I wouldn't pay > $150.

I know that the checkering on the topstrap is factory. I have seen a few blue model 27's with this checkering. I am just trying to determine if the nickel is factory and the year of manufacture.
    Thanks all for your replys!

That gun was made in 1959-1960. They came in nickel here's a picture of my two.The top strap is checkered on mod 27s.

Thanks ATF, nice pair of revolvers there! By the way, do you know if 4" barrels were available. Someone told me that they only came in 3.5, 5, 6 and 8 3/8th" barrel lengths
